Basil Jarman – Legendary Kempsey Born Owner / Driver
Basil Jarman, whose long working life in road transport involved driving many makes and models, was best known on the east coast of Australia for operating a number of Mercedes Benz trucks between Sydney and Brisbane.
There is a very interesting article in this months Vintage Trucks & Commercial Magazine documenting Basil’s life in the trucking industry and some of the iconic trucks that he has owned or driven over his very long career.
This photo of Basil, seen on the right, taken at South Kempsey in 1962 is of a Leyland Beaver with general freight loaded in Sydney and destined for Brisbane.
Purchased on September 15th 1969 this is the first of a long line of Mercedes Benz trucks that Basil operated over his lengthy career. The LPS 1418 is seen here out the front of his house in West Kempsey loaded with Coca Cola crates.
Basil’s first Mercedes Benz in West Kempsey after it received it’s “cocoa” colour paint job.
